I’ve been working with Parallels for about a week now I was using Windows Vista 2 years before it came available for public download in the Beta form so I do have some experience working in the MS area.
I have multiple qualifications from MS and wouldn’t trade them for all the bragging rights on iMac’s to save my life. With all that being said though, I’ve been working on both Parallels and iMac for about a week now. I’m very pleased with the iMac, but so so with Parallels. Thus far, Vista has frozen once. Now, thats not to say that iMac or Parallels is responsible for that. However, at this time, from the reviews I’ve read, it would appear that Fusion might do a little better.
Why did I buy Parallels instead of Fusion? First – Apple has a local store where I could see Parallels in action and it fulfilled all my requirements for the transition from PC to iMac. Since I couldn’t see Fusion first hand then I wasn’t willing to risk it.
Maybe there is a free trial. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time for this. Can’t complain too much, right?! Vista blue screen at least 4 times a week on me Second – I saw that Parallels would provide the necessary functions I required to convince the wife to make the transition from PC to iMac.
It has eased the burden. I intend to run both W7 and W2K8 on Parallels. If for some reason it lets me down, trust you me, I will update my review.
Would I buy it again? Would I like to test drive it first in comparison with Fusion? Of course. Did I have time? Yes and no I run XP. Only one issue: During the conversion process there was a Windoze dialog box that was obscured by the conversion progress window and was asking for, natch, reactivation of XP.
So the conversion seemed stalled about halfway through step 2 of 4 steps. I was able to go to the Parallels forums, search for the symptom, find the solution and complete the conversion without further incident. The Parallels forum seems to be a little bit of an open secret. There is no link to it from the main Parallels site that I can find but it is an excellent resource. Go to forum. The development team is active on the forum just as they seem to be actively watching the Amazon reviews.
Version 4 is more attractive than Version 3 to my eye. The toolbar is at the top where it should be and not on the side as it was before. Finally, Parallels Version 4 is faster than Version 3 on my machine and seems to be smarter in allocating RAM; I have 4 Gigs so I am not overly concerned but still, it is a nice design feature.

I haven’t installed the included Kapersky anti-virus because I don’t use Windows for email or much internet stuff and I’ve read that the anti-virus can slow down or possibly destabilize Parallels I’ve been running mainly Visual C sharp and Quicken.
Parallels is pretty slick with all the various options — if you want you can have individual Windows windows appear mixed in with your Mac windows. I find I prefer to keep Windows in a “cage” by giving it only a single Mac window in which the Windows environment appears. One thing that is slightly annoying is dealing with different shortcut key conventions in moving between Windows and Mac. This is not Parallels fault.
They give a lot of options in this regard. In general, Parallels works well, and seems to have a lot of capacity for customizing it; but I find the plethora of settings too daunting and stick with the defaults for most things.
